Curriculum

In the ‘Foundation Stage’ (Nursery and Reception) the curriculum is based on the ‘Early Learning Goals and children are gradually introduced to the National Literacy and Numeracy strategies. From Y1 all children follow the National Curriculum. English, Maths, Science and ICT are the Core Subjects. There is considerable emphasis on the teaching of reading and writing and on mental maths. Much Art, History and Geography is taught through integrated units of work.

Equality of access to all aspects of the Curriculum is planned for all pupils although the work of some pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is guided by individual education plans (IEP).

Children are encouraged to make informed choices and think critically showing care and consideration for the feelings of others.

CURRICULUM UNITS

Most aspects of the curriculum are taught through half termly units, which are planned to interest and motivate children. English, Maths, Science, ICT, Music, P.E. and R.E. are on-going throughout the year. History, Geography, Art and Design and Design Technology are modular with half termly rotations. PSHCE is taught during ‘Circle Time’ lessons or in separate lessons.

SPORT

Our policy is to give all children experience of a wide range of competitive and recreational sports. The children enjoy timetabled periods of P.E. and games during the school day. We also enjoy a range of after school activities which children are encouraged to participate in. Key Stage 2 children also go swimming for a period of approximately 2 terms.

We participate fully in the Sowerby Bridge Sports Association programme of tournaments. These include football, netball, swimming, athletics and cross-country.
