Key Stage 1

KEY STAGE 1 and 2

At Key Stage 1and 2 there is an emphasis within the Curriculum on the core subjects of English and Mathematics and with a greater emphasis on Science than on the foundation subjects. The National Numeracy and Literacy Strategies are followed.

Much science, art, history and geography is taught through integrated units of work. These units also include creative writing, maths, design and ICT.

Maths, Literacy, RE, PE and music are taught mainly as separate subjects. However, teachers are always looking to integrate subjects where appropriate. In all areas efforts are made to ensure staff and pupils have an awareness of health and safety issues.

Equality of access to all aspects of the curriculum is planned for all pupils although the work of some pupils with special educational needs (SEN) is guided by individual education plans (IEP).

The system is monitored by the Headteacher and Deputy initially. They do this through looking at teacher’s planning, children’s work and observations in the classroom.

TEACHING METHODS (KS1 & KS2)

Quality teaching is ensured by the involvement of all pupils in each phase of a lesson. Lessons often begin with the teacher explaining a skill and drawing on what the pupils already know. This ‘whole class’ teaching moves on to a task phase where pupils of broadly similar ability work together in groups. Here the teacher works with one or two ‘focus groups’ to provide extra challenge and pace. At the end of the session the whole class comes back together to review and discuss their learning with the teacher noting what has been achieved.
