 Dear Parents/Carers

Another manic week at Bolton Brow!  This week has seen Y6 doing their Cycling Proficiency, Reception Class on their trip to Manor Heath and Y2 on their trip to The Deep.  Also our Y3 went to Ryburn Valley High School to perform their Viking Assembly.  The children were superb in front of over 250 pupils.  They sang beautifully and did not appear to be intimidated (I’m talking about the Ryburn children!).  Well done Y3.  A big thank you to Ryburn for hosting us so brilliantly and providing us with a lovely lunch.

KS1 Sports went very well on a very warm afternoon.  Thank you Mrs Turton and team.  A great afternoon was had by all.  KS2 had their Sports on Wednesday afternoon and again the children performed and behaved beautifully.  Thank you Mr Kelesidis and team.

On Wednesday we took children to the annual Sowerby Bridge Schools Swimming Gala and has some of the best results we have ever had.  Well done everyone!

Reports come home tonight.  If you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s report your class teacher will be free from 3.30 – 5.00 on Tuesday 6 July.  Please pop into school, no appointment necessary.

Transition Day – Friday 9 July.  Children will be going to their new classes for the day.  Please take your child to their new classroom at the start of the day.

Dear Parents

We would like to wish Mrs Burke, her husband Chris and daughter Evie all the very best as she starts her maternity leave at the end of today.  We look forward to her return next year.  Miss Cooper will be covering her days until the end of term.

We have had a very busy week again.  I can’t believe where June has gone! On Tuesday our Y4 cricketers went to Pudsey to take part in the West Yorkshire Finals of the Drax Cup.  I am very proud to say that the children came 5th in the whole of West Yorkshire.  They were very unlucky not to get a place at Headingley.  Well done to Jack Shaw, Charlie Holt-Conway, Luke Robinson, Ellie Bell, Ben Burrows, Danielle Crabtree, Macauley Fulton, Brody Graham, Daniel Hilton, Sinead Mead.

Later that day Mr Kelesidis, Mr Normanton and I took a group of children to Headingley to watch the 20-20 game.  Our children were a credit to the school and thoroughly enjoyed what is now becoming an annual tradition. A big thank you to David for giving up his time yet again for the children.

We also took a large group of children to the athletics at Spring Hall.  The children represented the school brilliantly and won lots of medals.  The event was organised by the Sowerby Bridge Primary Schools Sports Association and I am delighted to say we have only missed one event throughout the whole year.  These events take a lot of organising and I am sure I speak on behalf of you all for organising the events and giving his time.

Reception Parents’ Evening – It was lovely to see so many new faces (and old) It is always an important evening and gets us thinking about the future.  It also brought home to me that Mrs Lewis is leaving is 3 weeks time (boo hoo!)

On Thursday evening I went with Mrs Wolfenden to watch 4 of our girls, Charlotte Welsh, Naomi Hiley, Olivia Webster and Stevie Leigh Sanderson dancing in the Ryburn Dance Extravaganza.  The girls have worked very hard over the last few months with Sarah Sutcliffe, an ex pupil of Bolton Brow, and their hard work was proved worthwhile by a stunning performance.  Well done Sarah and a big thank you!

Well done to Y5 for a smashing assembly this morning, even though the bid bad wolf did frighten our Reception children! Whoops!  Thanks to Mr Butterworth for your first assembly at our school.

Next week is National Schools Sports Week.  Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school every day including pumps or trainers.  There will be a ‘wake up, shake up’ session on Tuesday and Wednesday morning in the hall from 8.30 – 8.40.  Parents welcome!

 Dear Parents

What a busy week!  Our Y4 cricketers went along to Illingworth Cricket Club on Tuesday as part of the Drax Cricket Competition.  I am proud to say that our team won and they are now going forward to represent Calderdale in the West Yorkshire Knock Out Round on Tuesday 22 June. Following the tournament I received an e mail from the organiser saying ‘I have had quite a few schools comment on your children today, how well they played, how well they behaved and what great sports people they are.’ What a fantastic achievement.  We wish them the best of luck!

Today saw our Rounder’s Team go to Ryburn to compete in the Sowerby Bridge Schools Rounder’s Tournament.  We didn’t win this one unfortunately but we won some games and the children enjoyed themselves.

On Thursday our Reception Class went to Sowerby Bridge High School to take part in their Multi Skills Competition.  They mixed and played with children from a variety of schools in Sowerby Bridge and had a fantastic time.  I am advised by staff at SBHS that our children were beautifully behaved as ever!  Well done everyone.

On Thursday Y5 went to Magna Science Museum which is based in an old steel works near Rotherham.  Children had a great time followed by a very wet experience in the water park.  I had some parents come up to me that were nothing to do with our school but were there with their own children/families.  They wanted to point out how well behaved our children were and how thoughtful they were around the little children. I was very proud of Y5.

SUMMER SCHOOL – As you know, we have for the last few years run a very successful summer school for our Y5/Y4 pupils.  We relied on external funding to run the school and had to jump through many hoops to get it.  Unfortunately there was no funding available for us this year.  This is very sad as our school was used as a model of success for other establishments.  I have a feeling that this may be the start of a very difficult time in schools with regards to funding arrangements.

On Wednesday afternoon this week, Y6 organised a fantastic fundraiser to help towards the costing of their trip to Mixenden Outdoor Centre.  Including a £100 donation from the PFA the Y6 children raised £414.96.  This is a staggering amount of money.  The children and staff have asked me to pass on a MASSIVE thankyou to everyone who donated buns, toys and books for the fair.  Children would also like to say thank you to everyone who helped and joined in the fun.  I think the economic well being of our country could well be in safe hands!

Year 5 are doing their class assembly next week to which you are all warmly invited. I am advised that it will be a fairly lengthy experience for us all and Mr Butterworth requested that we did not have an achievement assembly as well.  For next week only there will be no achievement certificates.

PARENT GOVERNOR - We have a vacancy for a parent governor.  If you are interested in becoming a governor or would like further information please see Pat Lewis (Clerk to Governors).  Nominations to be received by 2 July 2010. If we have more than one person interested we will have to run a ballot.

Thanks to everyone who sent in uniform orders.  This helps us to get your orders ready when we have time.  Please send your order in as we approach the end of term if you have not already done so.

Dear Parents/Carers

What a busy week we have had!  We’ve had children out at Hebden Hey from Y4, we have had children playing Rugby and we have also had a Cricket Tournament with other Sowerby Bridge Schools.  This is all climaxed by a lovely assembly today by Class 2.  It was great to see so many parents and friends there to cheer the children on.

Sickness – We have received the latest information on ‘Guidance on Infection Control in Schools and Nurseries’.  We received this from the Department of Health via our School Nurse.  As many of you know, we have had lots of children with a sickness and/or tummy bug in recent days.  Can we please request that you do not send your children to school until they have been clear from being sick or the last tummy upset, for 48 hours.  This will obviously help us to reduce the risk of infection for children, families and staff.  Obviously this can have a huge impact on staffing the school.  We thank you for your support.

Back to School Evening – 26 May

We are getting forms back from you, thank you very much.  If the evening is to be the success that we want it to be, we need lots of you to come on Wednesday night.  Can we have all forms back by Monday morning please.

As you know, we always try to celebrate our children’s success both in and out of school.  Many of you know that Charlie Holt-Conway is a tremendous Crown Green bowler,  whose reputation is growing.  I am delighted to tell you that Charlie has been selected to represent Yorkshire at U-18 level, bearing in mind that Charlie is only in Y4, this is a fantastic achievement.  In fact, I am reliably informed that Charlie is the youngest ever representative at this level.  Well done Charlie, your family and school are very, very proud of you.

Also on Tuesday, Mrs Woodhouse and Miss Howard will be setting off to Ireland to visit our partner school.  We hope they have a fantastic time.

7.5.10

 Dear Parents

Firstly an apology (yet again!).  I have been advised that we will have to take the training day on Tuesday 8 June.  This was due to a simple breakdown in communication between Calderdale MBC and the school.  I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you and confirm that school will re-open after half term on Wednesday 9 June.

Last week our Star Award winners from KS2 were taken bowling and once again their fantastic behaviour and attitude outside of school was commented on by members of the public.  It’s always good to know when our children are outside of school representing not just us, but also their families, that they are a credit to the school.

The School Council is currently looking at ways of improving the school wildlife area and other possible planting areas around school.  If you have any great ‘green’ ideas or expertise that you would like to share with us please let me know.

Our ‘Back to School’ evening is on May 26th at 6pm.  We are having our staff meeting next week to draw up a timetable and I will get the information to you as soon as I can.  One of the people coming will be an internet security expert.  We have recently had a couple of incidents in school of cyber bullying, usually through Facebook on a home computer.  Our consultant will be able to offer you advice on this.

We are very fortunate to have two Cricket Coaches coming into school to work with our KS2 children on a Thursday and Friday afternoon.  This initiative is through the local cricket clubs and we are grateful for their support.  We have some very talented cricketers and as a result of this we are able to enter local competitions.  We have also entered a team for the Drax Cup and are looking forward to arranging a trip to Headingley for a 20-20 night match.  Exciting times!

TESCO VOUCHERS – Please return any vouchers you may still have by 14 May as this is the last week for collecting.  Thanks to everyone who has sent vouchers.  We will keep you informed about the equipment we order.

LOST PROPERTY – We have a box overflowing with items of uniform, coats etc.

Please come in and check if you have lost anything.

TRAMPOLINING – If you completed a form for your child to take part in this after school activity which started on Tuesday 4 May.  Please go along to Sowerby Bridge High next Tuesday.

PFA NEWS:

Summer Bash Meeting to be held at Gail Oldroyd’s Tuesday 11 May 8pm.

WANTED SOFT TOYS –  unwanted soft toys in good condition. Please see Lisa Masters.  Thank you.

30.4.10

Dear Parents

As some of you are probably aware, there was an incident of a child getting out of the school gates unsupervised on Tuesday afternoon.  We want to reassure you that we have taken Local Authority Health and Safety advice, reviewed our security operations and taken immediate remedial action.  This incident was deeply distressing for everyone concerned and we want to assure you that your children’s safety is always at the forefront of our thoughts and actions.  The gate system is temporary until we have a new system in place by September.  The security of the school building is also under review with the Governors and Health and Safety team and we will be contacting you over the coming weeks if any new arrangements are to take place.

BACK TO SCHOOL EVENING – 26 May 6.00pm

I have managed to confirm the bookings of Mr Ian Ross, Maths Consultant, Calderdale MBC and Mr Trevor Harris, ICT Consultant.  Mr Ross will run two fun maths sessions in the hall.  These will be simple, practical sessions showing how children learn the basics in mathematics, totally non threatening!  Mr Harris is an IT expert and he is coming to talk specifically on internet safety.  We are sure that this will prove to be very popular as we are aware that we live in an IT world where cyber bullying is becoming more common.  These sessions will sit alongside lessons being delivered by teachers in classrooms.  Once we make final decisions about the lessons we will send our pro forma’s.  This will be a thoroughly entertaining evening but should also give you an insight into how teachers teach and how children learn.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Class R:  Jacob Leslie, Ellie Wood

Class 1:  Ashton Fermoyle, Kieran Jones

Class 2:  Brooke Sheils, Cara Wright

Class 3:  Mollie Merrifield, Jordan Franklin

Hope you all have a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend.  School re-opens on Tuesday.

23rd April

Dear Parents

Happy St George’s Day.  We have spent the week talking to the children in assembly about St George but it’s the first time in a while that we decided to mark the occasion in school.  We have been delighted at your reponse!  We’ll definitely keep it in our calendar.  Thanks again for joining in so whole heartedly and for sending the children so well attired!  Hurrah for St George!

Y3 – We say goodbye to Miss Cooper today.  Heather came to us in January and has been an absolute star!  The children have loved being taught by her and she has loved teaching the children!  I know from your responses that you have enjoyed working with Heather and I am sure that you will join me in wishing her the very best for the future.

The good news is that Miss Binns returns full time on Monday!  The two teachers have worked very closely over the last two weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

They have spent a lot of time working together ensuring that processes remain the same and the children are well prepared for Monday.  We are very lucky to have 2 teachers of such a high quality working with our children.

Mrs Gould – I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Gould has had a beautiful baby boy, Seb, and that both are doing very well.  I know that you will join with me in wishing both Sam and Dom (along with baby Seb) the very best of luck!

Year 3 are selling toast (20p) and juice (15p) on the decking by Class R next week.  They are raising money to buy watches as they learn to tell the time.  Please join them for breakfast!

PFA NEWS

SCHOOL COUNCIL BUN SALE: Fri 30 April buns 20p each. We are raising funds for our Wildlife Garden Project.  Any donations of baking would be greatly appreciated.  Please drop them in class on the day.

The stall held last Sunday at the ‘World Dock Pudding Competition’ raised £100 for PFA funds.  A big thanks to Lisa Masters!

17th April

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back!  I trust you had a happy and peaceful holiday.  I can’t believe that

we are in our last term of this year.  Having looked at the diary I can’t believe how much we have to get done this term either!

As a staff we will be getting together early next week to go through the diary dates for the coming term.  I hope to have them for you in the broadcast next week.  One of the events ‘BACK BY POPULAR REQUEST’ will be a ‘Back to School Evening’.  This will be a great opportunity for you to come into school and see how teachers teach and children learn in a fun way.  More details to follow.

Year 3 - We will be saying goodbye to Miss Cooper next Friday.  Miss Cooper has been covering for Miss Binns who has been recovering from her broken leg.  Miss Binns has been doing a phased return and will be taking over full time on Monday 26 April.  Miss Cooper has done a fantastic job and I sincerely hope that we will be seeing lots more of her in the future.

On Friday 23 April Y4 will be doing their class assembly.  We hope to see lots of you in school to watch them.  Alongside of this the children will be celebrating

St George’s Day.  We look forward to seeing everyone in red and white.  Hoorah for St George!

On 22 April you will see some ladies out in the playground stopping you and talking about Nursery provision for our school.  The Government have brought in new legislation which requires us to provide 15 hours of free nursery provision.  This will obviously have an impact on how our nursery operates. However, before any decision is made we will be seeking your thoughts and views as to how we can best meet the needs of our families.  If you are stopped please complete a questionnaire because we are interested in your thoughts and experiences even if you don’t have a child of nursery age.

SRI LANKA – Mr Kelesidis and Mrs Lewis had a fantastic week in Sri Lanka visiting our partner school.  They were made very welcome by the staff and children of St Anthony’s School in Kandy and have memories that they will treasure forever.  You will be able to see their photographs in the very near future!

SPORT RELIEF – Thanks to everyone who supported this event.  A total of

£156.90 was raised.

BUN SALE -  A big thanks to everyone who supported the sale to raise funds for spinal injuries.  The fantastic amount of £122.70 was raised.  We wish Michelle Chatha all the very best of luck in the London Marathon as she raises more money for this charity.

Dear Parents

Thankfully the weather has been fantastic allowing us to get the most out of  Sport Relief Day. The day started with ‘Wake Up – Shake –Up’ in the Hall. That was a hoot!! A huge thank you to staff, particularly to Miss Wheater who was a trifle too energetic…. particularly when Take That were playing. From there the children all took part in a variety of events e.g. Mr Smith set up a fantastic obstacle/bike race for Reception, Class1 and Class2. He then set up an obstacle course on the field for classes 4, 5 and 6. All the children had a great time and we have some lovely photos for the web site. Trevor did a lot of this in his own time so a BIG THANK YOU to Trevor! Mrs Kershaw also organised a hula-hoop competition over lunchtime. She also very kindly bought all the competitors a small bag of hula hoops for later. What a star!

I must say a special thank you to our great Y6 children. Their help and hard work has made today very special for our school.

It was good to see so many of you at Parents’ Evening this week. We always get a good turn out and I managed to speak to a good many of you during the course of the evenings. If you were unable to attend, don’t worry, a letter will be coming shortly inviting you to make another appointment. We have another ‘Back to School’ Evening in the pipeline for next term so watch this space for the date. We are also trying to arrange another Internet Safety evening for parents as this is a topic which grows and grows!

Friday 26 March is our Star Award Assembly day.  We are intending to text you well in advance so that you know if your child has won an award.  Even if your child hasn’t won an award we hope that you will join this us for this special assembly.

By popular request we are holding a decorated egg competition.  Children may bring their eggs into class on Thursday 25 March when judging will take place.  The winners will be announced in our special assembly on 26 March.  The theme is famous people!  Over to you!

I have received a series of complaints about parking outside of school at the beginning and end of the school day.  Please ensure that you take into account children’s safety at all times if you are parking outside school.  I am advised that the police and community support officers will be making random visits.

REMINDER – There are no OOSH clubs next week. They will start again after Easter.

Dear Parents

Another busy week!  Year 1 took part in a PE Partnership Competition at Sowerby Bridge High School.  Benchball was the game this time and I know from the feedback that the children had a fantastic time and enjoyed playing games with children from a variety of different primary schools.  Well done!

Year 6 went on the ‘Safety for Life’ course at Todmorden.  This is organised by the Police on an annual basis and the children learn safety skills from the Police and Fire Services.  I received a phone call from the organisers saying how well our children had done and how beautifully behaved they were.  Well done!

NO ACHIEVEMENT ASSEMBLY ON FRIDAY 19 March.  This is because we are holding a series of events for Sport Relief and we need to start promptly at 9.15.  The day has been organised into a series of events for children and as long as it doesn’t pour with rain we should have a great day.  Please ensure children come dressed for sporting activities on this day.  A donation of £1 would be appreciated.  All monies raised will be sent to Sport Relief.

Dear parents

We have had a great but busy week. We particularly enjoyed having 3 students from Ryburn, Gareth Clayton, Jack Gunter and Megan Healey. It’s always nice to see ex pupils returning, particularly ones who are interested in going into teaching.

We say goodbye to Mrs Gould today as she starts her maternity leave. She only has a few weeks to go so has been very brave working up to the last minute. We wish her good luck and will keep you informed.

We have had quite a few visitors this week including ‘Detective Duck’ from Calderdale Police and the Road Safety Pedestrian Training Team who worked with Y2 children. This training was particularly helpful and I know Miss Wheater and Class 2 thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Tomorrow sees our footballers taking part in the Sowerby Bridge Sports Association Tournament at Ryburn School. The first game starts at around 9:30 if you feel able to come and support them you are more than welcome.

Yesterday was World Book Day. We made the decision not to dress up as we are saving that joy for later in the year. Watch this space!

Text Messaging- Mrs Banham has taken total and absolute control of this way of communicating with you. We have been talking to the children and staff about different ways and reasons to message you. Currently these include celebration of good work, good behaviour, achievement certificates and general all round praise, as well as general reminders etc. We do not want this to take the place of telephone calls or face to face discussions. However a number of you have expressed how impressed you are with the scheme. It makes sense to expand it. I shall be coming out into the playground with my mobile phone in hand to talk to you and get your opinions.

SUPERMARKET VOUCHERS – We are once again collecting Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers.  Please send them into school to help us to get

more free equipment for school.  Thank you!
